From Old Galician-Portuguese mãollo (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Late Latin manuc(u)lus, modified ultimately from Latin manipulus, from manus (hand) and -pleō (fill). Cognate with Portuguese molho and Spanish manojo.
