  1. (golf, dated) A metal-headed golf club with a large highly lofted head. Replaced by a sand iron or wedge in a modern set of clubs.
    • 1924, Ford Madox Ford, Parade’s End, Random House, page 75:
      On this occasion he had just examined some notes of other mashie shots, had put the notebook back in his pocket, and had addressed his ball with a niblick that had an unusually roughened face and a head like a hatchet.
