nine-thousander (plural nine-thousanders)

1. Any mountain that extends more than 9,000 metres (29,528 ft) from the surface.

     Let’s say that Everest was 200 meters higher, that is, a nine-thousander peak. Would an ascent without additional oxygen still be possible?

2. Any mountain that extends more than 9,000 feet but less than 10,000 feet above sea level.

Usage notes

• Since Mount Everest is only 8,848 metres tall, there are no nine-thousanders (sense 1) on Earth. Usage of sense 1 this term is either theoretical or referring to an extraterrestrial mountain.
