editCompound of peri (“word”, literally “about, around”) + bahasa (“language”), from Malay peribahasa, from Sanskrit, either परिभाषा (paribhāṣā, “definition”) or परिभासते (paribhāsate, “look like”) as compound of परि (pari) + भाश् (bhāś). Cognate of Balinese ᬧᬭᬶᬩᬲ (paribasa), Madurese parèbhâsa.
