From earlier pedato, possibly from Sanskrit पदार्थ (padārtha, meaning of a word, substance). Cognate of Balinese ᬧᬶᬤᬭ᭄ᬢ (pidarta, speech), Old Javanese padārtha (meaning, explanation, content).
