From earlier pedato, possibly from Sanskrit पदार्थ (padārtha, “meaning of a word, substance”). Cognate of Balinese ᬧᬶᬤᬭ᭄ᬢ (pidarta, “speech”), Old Javanese padārtha (“meaning, explanation, content”).
