From Proto-Finnic *ruka + -o, borrowed either from Proto-Germanic [Term?] (whence Icelandic hrúga) or Proto-Germanic [Term?] (whence Old Norse hroki (“heap, pile”)). Cognate with Karelian ruko and dialectal Estonian ruga.
