- from shtrij (“to spread, stretch”) + unproductive suffix -ungë,[2] compare ballungë, shtëllungë,
- from Proto-Albanian *strungā, from Proto-Indo-European *strn̥gʰ-éh₂, from *strengʰ- (“to twist together”),[3]
- or dissimilated from Proto-Albanian *satrunkā, from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-tr(o)nkʷ-eh₂, from *sm̥- (“together”) + *trenkʷ- (“push”) + *-éh₂.[4]
