Etymology edit

Earlier also stræve, cf. Norwegian Bokmål streve and Swedish sträva. Borrowed from Middle Low German streven and German streben (to strive), from Proto-Germanic *stribāną. The English verb strive is borrowed from Old French estriver (to compete).
