  • An archaic active present participle form of the verb syödä (*syö- + -pä), meaning "one who eats", so called because the disease was once believed to be caused by a worm that eats the body from inside; thus the archaic terms ruumiinmato (lit. "worm of the body") and koi (moth). See also the usage notes for -pä.
