editInherited from Ottoman Turkish طبقی (ṭıbḳı),[1][2][3] from Arabic طِبْقًا (ṭibqan), adverbial accusative of طِبْق (ṭibq, “thing that matches in form”), it is uncertain if it is derived with the Arabic ـِيّ (-iyy, nisba suffix) or Turkish -ı (possessive suffix).[4]
