From Proto-Vietic *p-laːs (fathom), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *laas (to spread; to extend) (via *plaas); cognate with Mon ပၠံး (plah, to spread out; to extend), Riang plɑs¹. Related to sải.

Attested in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經) as 阿賴, composed of (MC 'a) + (MC lajH) (modern SV: a lại).
