Inherited from Old Spanish trasfegar, possibly from a Vulgar Latin *trānsfrīcāre (from fricō (to rub)) or *trānsfaecāre (from faex (dregs)).

Cognate with Portuguese and Galician trasfegar, Catalan trafegar, Italian trafficare.
