From a Vulgar Latin root *horrīre < Latin horrēre, present active infinitive of horreō "to be afraid" (other forms or parts of the verb from horrēscere, horrēscō as with many other 4th conjugation verbs); compare Aromanian urãscu; cf. change in meaning also in Albanian urrej "to hate".
