Etymology 1

Compare Latvian valte ((type of) boat), which according to Endzelīns is from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (to turn, wind), whence also vélti (to roll; to full (cloth)) and Latvian velt (to roll). Smoczynski explains the word as originally meaning "an object made by nailing (boards together)", invoking vélti's secondary meaning of "to beat cloth".[1]

Possibly the same word as Etymology 3 below, valtis (fishing net). Compare Greek γρίπος (grípos, fishing net; fishing boat).
