editFrom Middle High German verbërn, from Old High German ferberan, *firberan, *firberan, from Proto-West Germanic *fraberan, from Proto-Germanic *fraberaną (“to hold back, restrain; to bear, endure”); equivalent to vor- + bèeran. Cognate with English forbear, Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐌱𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌰𐌽 (frabairan).
