Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *(s)tíṣṭaHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stíštaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *stísteh₂ti, from *steh₂- (to stand). Cognate with Latin sistō, Ancient Greek ἵστημι (hístēmi), Old English standan (whence English stand).
