λέσχη

editEtymology
editMost plausibly from *λέχ-σκᾱ[1] with metathesis of ⟨σ⟩.
For stem λεχ- see λέχομαι (lékhomai, “lie down”) / λέχω (lékhō) & λέχος n (lékhos, “bed”). Cognates: with stem λοχ- λόχος (lókhos), with λεκτ-: λέκτρον n (léktron, “bed, couch”), Latin lectus.
However there is no proof for the connection to λέχος (lékhos, “bed”) or λέχομαι (lékhomai, “to recline”). Long ago, the agreement with Hebrew לִשְׁכָּה (lišḵá) was observed. The Hebrew is surely a foreign word considering the variation with נִשְׁכָּה (nišḵá) and the lack of Semitic cognates, but it is obscure if the Hebrew word is from Greek or the word in both languages is carried over from an unknown language via viniculture in an original meaning of pub, triclinium, making the provenience as obscure as that of Proto-Indo-European *wóyh₁nom (“wine”).[2]
