Etymology

Uncertain. Solmsen compares μόλις to μῶλος (môlos, turmoil, fight), as well as to μέλλω (méllō, to be about to do, to hesitate), but Beekes considers the former phonetically problematic due to the root vocalism, and the latter semantically uncompelling.
