Inherited from the mediaeval Byzantine Greek ξέρω (xérō), ἐξέρω (exérō), from Ancient Greek ἐξεῦρον (exeûron), aorist of ἐξευρίσκω (exeurískō, to find out), from ἐξ- (ex-, ex-) +‎ εὑρίσκω (heurískō, to find) (whence Modern βρίσκω (vrísko)).
