Inherited from Ancient Greek ἐκγελάω (ekgeláō, to laugh out loud (at somebody's expense)) (contracted form ἐκγελῶ (ekgelô)).[1] By surface analysis, ξε- (xe-) +‎ γελάω (geláo).
