From the Koine Greek πισσᾰλοιφέω (pissaloiphéō), πισσαλοιφῶ (pissaloiphô) ("smear with pitch") with assimilation [i-a > a-a] (πισσ-α > πασ-α) + αλείφω (aleífo, smear).[1]
