Etymology edit

The word resembles σκόλοψ (skólops, palisade) and, outside Greek, Albanian hell (icicle; skewer), Lithuanian kuõlas (pole) and Proto-Slavic *kolъ (stake). Probably from Proto-Indo-European *kelh₂- (to hew).
