From τακτ(ός) (takt(ós), arranged, fixed, set) +‎ -ο- +‎ -ποιώ (-poió, to make). First part from the ancient τάξη (táxē, order)/τάσσω (tássō, to arrange, to put in order) and suffix from the ancient ποιέω (poiéō) / ποιῶ. First attested in 1855, a calque of French mettre en ordre.
