Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek φθινόπωρον (phthinópōron),[1] from φθίνω (phthínō, to lessen, to fall down, to wilt) and ὀπώρ(α) f (opṓr(a), last part of summer; fruit) + -ον n (-on).[2] Doublet of φτινόπωρο (ftinóporo). Also see χινόπωρο (chinóporo).
