Etymology

edit

Inherited from Byzantine Greek φτιάζω (phtiázō) as follows: past tense formation in the pattern of e.g. έπαιξα (épaixa), ancient ἔπαιξα (épaixa), stem παιξ- - present tense παίζω (paízo, play). Further formation of the new present tense φτιάχνω in the pattern of e.g. έριξα (érixa), ancient ἔρριξα (érrhixa, past tense), stem ριξ- - present tense ρίχνω (ríchno, throw).[2] Compare to the colloquial φτιάνω (ftiáno) and the formation of vernacular varieties.
Or, for the etymological spelling φτειάχνω (fteiáchno),[3] a metaplasm of Byzantine Greek φτειάνω (phteiánō) / φθειάνω (phtheiánō) based on past stem of φτειάζω (phteiázō) / φτειάζω.
Both, from forms of medieval εὐθειάζω (eutheiázō, straighten, correct) / εὐτειάζω, εὐθειάνω (eutheiánō) / εὐτειάνω, from ancient εὐθεῖα (eutheîa), feminine of εὐθύς (euthús, straight).
