χολέρα

editEtymology
editA medical expression. Formally it may be compared with ὑστέρα (hustéra, “uterus, womb”) and names of diseases like ἴκτερος (íkteros, “jaundice”) and ὕδερος (húderos, “dropsy”). Perhaps, this word is a substantivization from unattested *χολερός (*kholerós), with shift of accent. According to Beekes, a basic derivation is more likely from χολή (kholḗ, “gall, bile”) than from χολάς (kholás, “entrails, guts”), but a Pre-Greek origin cannot be ruled out. Irish galar (“sickness, illness”) has to be kept separate.
