Etymology

Inherited from Byzantine Greek ψήνω (psḗnō), from Ancient Greek ἕψω (hépsō, boil, seethe) based on the past tesne stem of ἥψησα (hḗpsēsa) in the pattern of άφησα (áfisa, past tense), stem αφησ- - αφήνω (afíno, present tense).[1] Compare to ψένω (pséno). Also see Mariupol Greek пси́ну (psínu).
