Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish طوت (tut, dut), ultimately of Persian origin. Loaned also in Romanian dudă, Russian тут (tut).

Turkism (cf. Ottoman Turkish طوداق (dudak, lips)), probably of onomatopoeic origin. Some meanings may have been influenced by native ду́я (dúja, to blow).

According to Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary, the meaning “unbaptised girl” is derived from the belief that unbaptised children become spoiled and slovenly.
