From Proto-Permic *kɔrni, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *kerjä-. Cognates include Finnish kerjätä and Hungarian kér.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian корны (korny), Komi-Permyak корны (korny) and Komi-Yazva корнө (kornå).
