Learned borrowing from Old Armenian եղբայր (ełbayr). All dialectal forms are inherited from Old Armenian *աղբայր (*ałbayr), a by-form of եղբայր (ełbayr).

By dissimilation from *երբայր (*erbayr), by adding a prothetic vowel to *րբայր (*rbayr), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰréh₂tēr (with regular *Br*rB metathesis and *-t--յ- (-y-) sound change between vowels).
