EtymologyEdit

From ընդ (ənd) +‎ կեր (ker), so literally "with-eater, messmate, table companion". For the formation compare Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌱𐌰 (gahlaiba) and Latin compāniō (English companion). It is possible that the Armenian word was modeled on Latin (from Roman armies in Armenia).
