Grown from *ծաղ- (*cał-), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵl̥h₂-, *ǵelh₂-, whence also ծիծաղ (cicał). Cognate with Ancient Greek γελάω (geláō, to laugh), γέλως (gélōs, laughter), γαλήνη (galḗnē, calm at sea), γαληνός (galēnós, calm).
