Old Armenian edit

Etymology edit

The root is *ճմ- (*čm-), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gem- (to seize, take; to squeeze, press) and cognate with Ancient Greek γέντο (génto, he grasped), Proto-Slavic *žęti (to squeeze, press) (Russian жать (žatʹ), жму (žmu)), Middle Irish gemel (fetter), Old Norse kumla (to squeeze). Related to ճմռել (čmṙel), ճմռթել (čmṙtʻel).
