Etymology 1

From Middle Armenian *մգլիլ (*mglil, to rot, spoil, mould), attested in the compound մգլահոտ (mglahot). Probably related to մգլել (mglel, to cloud). See also մըկլըմանդի (məkləmandi).

Etymology 2

Connected with Old Armenian մէգ (mēg). The meaning ‘to cloud’ might have developed into ‘to become dark’, from which the meanings մգլել (mglel, to rot, spoil, mould) and *մգլել (*mglel, to become black (as a result of scorching, singeing, rusting)) (see մգլահոտ (mglahot)) may have developed.
