Etymology edit

Ačaṙyan leaves the origin open. For the sense development “splendour, brilliance” from “shadow” he compares Old English scima (twilight, gloom; ray, brightness).

According to Jahukyan we are dealing with a contamination of two sources: the sense of “shadow; veil, headcover” comes from Proto-Indo-European *skʰew-, a by-form of *skew- (to cover); the sense of “splendour, brilliance” is from Iranian, compare Persian شکوه (šokôh, majesty, magnificence, dignity, grandeur).
