Old Armenian edit

Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂olyo-. Cognates include Old Irish uile and Welsh holl.

Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *solw-yo-, from, *solh₂- (whole).

A contamination of both is possible.

For the semantic correspondence “being alive” : “wholeness” compare Turkish sağ (alive; whole).

Urartian 𒌌𒄖(𒌑)𒊺 (ul-gu-ú-še or ul-gu-še /ulguše/, health, well-being, the being alive) may be borrowed from Proto-Armenian.
