From Old Armenian չտես (čʿtes). For the sense development compare Azerbaijani görməmiş.

չտես (čʿtes) (superlative ամենաչտես)

  1. someone that has not seen or something that has not been seen
  2. (dialectal) ignorant, not having seen much of the world
  3. (dialectal) someone who takes interest in every foolish thing
  4. (derogatory) greedy, grasping, eager, insatiable, specifically of someone who quickly rose from poverty to wealth and is now arrogant about it in an unseemly way; an upstart
    Synonym: (dialectal) գյորմամիշ (gyormamiš)
    Չտեսի մեկն է․ ոսկի ժամացույց է կախել, և կարծես ամենքի աչքն ուզում է կոխել, թե ա՛յ, ոսկի ժամացույց ունիմ։
    Čʿtesi mekn ē; oski žamacʿuycʿ ē kaxel, ew karces amenkʿi ačʿkʿn uzum ē koxel, tʿe áy, oski žamacʿuycʿ unim.
    He's an upstart; he wears a golden watch and it's as if he wants to show off to everyone, "see, I have a golden watch."
