From earlier *պատուհրաս (*patuhras), from Middle Persian [script needed] (pātūfrās, punishment, restitution), composed of the prefix [script needed] (pāt-, against) and from a word meaning “question; questioning”; compare Middle Persian [script needed] (frašn, question; questioning), Avestan 𐬟𐬭𐬀𐬱𐬥𐬀 (frašna, a dispute to be settled in a court).
