From the root ש־ב־ל‎ (sh-b-l). Cognate with Akkadian 𒋗𒁍𒌌𒋾 (šubulta, ear of wheat), Arabic سَبَلَة(sabala) and Aramaic שׁוּבַּלְתָּא/שִׁבַּלְתָּא(šubbaltā/šibbaltā).
