Inherited from Prakrit [script needed] (baṁdhaï), itself from Sanskrit बन्धति (bandhati), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéndʰ-e-ti, from *bʰendʰ- (to tie). Cognate with Punjabi بَنّھݨا (bannhṇā) / ਬੰਨ੍ਹਣਾ (bannhṇā), Saraiki ٻَنھَݨ (ḇanhaṇ), Sindhi ٻَنڌَڻُ / ॿंधणु, Marathi बांधणे (bāndhṇe), English bind.
