Etymology edit
Possibly an artificial word from بَرَمَ (barama, “to twist, to shape, to contort”), unless these verbs are denominal from the instruments, compare بَرَى (barā, “to trim, to nib”) and بَرَدَ (barada, “to file, to pare”), though this is also suspect of Middle Iranian borrowing. Arabic tradition usually claims that “مُخْل (muḵl) is Greek and بَيْرَم (bayram) is Persian”, but Vullers in his Persian–Latin dictionary lists the Persian as from Arabic, and indeed Dihḵudā’s quote for the word is from al-Ḵwarizmī’s originally Arabic مفاتيح العلوم (mafātīḥ al-ʕulūm), and surely at least the Classical Syriac ܒܝܪܡܐ only given by Bar Bahlul is from Arabic.
