Inherited from Proto-Turkic *til, *tïl (“tongue; language”). Cognate with Azerbaijani dil, Bashkir тел (tel), Dolgan тыл, Kazakh тіл (tıl), Kyrgyz тил (til), Ottoman Turkish دل (dil) (whence Turkish dil), Tatar тел (tel), and Turkmen dil.
