From the root خ ر ف (ḵ-r-f) meaning "to gather produce", "to become ripe or attaining fullness". Cognate with Hebrew חֹורֶף (khóref), Sabaean and Qatabanian Old South Arabian 𐩭𐩧𐩰 (ḫrf), Mehri ḫarf, Shehri ḫorf, Soqotri ḥorf, Harsusi ḫōref, Ge'ez ኀሪፍ (ḫärif).
