Borrowed from Persian سفره (sofre, tablecloth), itself from Arabic سُفْرَة (sufra, victuals).

Borrowed from Arabic سُفْرَة (sufra, victuals; table, especially for eating). Displaced native خوان (xân). Cheung speculates it is from a root meaning to make up "beautify"[1]
