Inherited from Proto-Turkic *süŕ- (to strain, filter);[1] cognate with Azerbaijani süzmək, Bashkir һөҙөү (höźöw), Chuvash сӗрме (sĕrme), Kazakh сүзу (süzu), Kyrgyz сүзүү (süzüü), Tatar сөзү (sözü), Uyghur سۈزمەك (süzmek) and Uzbek suzmoq.

  1. (transitive) to strain, filter, percolate, separate solid from liquid
  2. (transitive, by extension) to examine, inspect, observe carefully
  3. (transitive) to half close the eyes from drowsiness, intoxication or rapture
