Etymology

edit

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish سوزمك (süzmek, to strain, filter, to examine carefully), from Proto-Turkic *süŕ- (to strain, filter). Compare Hungarian szűr (to strain, filter), an early Turkic borrowing from the Bulgar language.

Akin to Proto-Mongolic *sür- (to sprinkle) (Mongolian шүрших (šüršix, to spatter)) and Proto-Tungusic *sir- (to strain, press out, to milk) (Evenki сир (sir, to squeeze, milk)). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
