Etymology

edit

Probably from Latin camisia, from Proto-Germanic *hamiþiją. Compare Classical Syriac ܩܡܝܨܬܐ (qamīṣtā, shirt; undershirt).

A minority of scholars think that the Latin word is indeed borrowed from Semitic. The principal witness for this theory is a Ugaritic form /qms/, seemingly meaning “garment”. However, this word is not attested in any other old Semitic language.

قَمِيص (qamīṣm (plural قُمْصَان (qumṣān) or أَقْمِصَة (ʔaqmiṣa))

    1. (Modern Standard Arabic) a short and usually form-fitting upper-body outer garment; a sleeved top; a shirt (such as a T-shirt or a dress shirt)
    2. (archaic) any long non-bifurcated sleeved loose-fitting garment (such as a housecoat or a nightshirt); a robe
      • (Can we date this quote?), ʾAbū Dawūd, السنن [The Traditions]:
        كَانَ أَحَبَّ الثِّيَابِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْقَمِيصُ
kāna ʔaḥabba ṯ-ṯiyābi ʔilā n-nabiyyi ṣallā l-lahu ʕalayhi wasallama al-qamīṣu
The most lovely garment to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was the robe.
      • (Can we date this quote?), al-Tirmiḏī, الجامع الصحيح [The Verifiable Collection]:
        يَا عُثْمَانُ إِنَّهُ لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ يُقَمِّصُكَ قَمِيصًا، فَإِنْ أَرَادُوكَ عَلَى خَلْعِهِ فَلَا تَخْلَعْهُ لَهُمْ
yā ʕuṯmānu ʔinnahu laʕalla l-laha yuqammiṣuka qamīṣan, faʔin ʔarādūka ʕalā ḵalʕihi falā taḵlaʕhu lahum
O ʾUṯmān! It may be that ʾAllāh will [one day] vest you with a robe, and if they ever wish you to take it off, do not take it off for them!
      • (Can we date this quote?), al-Nasāʾī, السنن الصغرى [The Lesser Collection]:
        قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «الْإِسْبَالُ فِي الْإِزَارِ، وَالْقَمِيصِ، وَالْعِمَامَةِ مَنْ جَرَّ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا خُيَلَاءَ لَا يَنْظُرُ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
Dangling is about lower garments, the robe, and the headdress: whosoever trails along any of these out of self-delusion, ʾAllāh does not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.
