Pronunciation edit

Etymology 1 edit

Perhaps, as theorized by Monier, originally an interjectional interrogative word like "how strange!" which described an oddity or deficiency in something, and thus from Proto-Indo-European *ku, formed from the base root *kʷ-.

Particle edit

कु (ku)

  1. a pronominal base appearing in kútas, kútra, kuvíd, kúha, kvá, and as a prefix implying deterioration, depreciation, deficiency, want, littleness, hindrance, reproach, contempt, guilt
  2. perhaps it originally signified "how (strange!)"
  3. as a separate word, it occurs only in the lengthened form कू (kū́)
