Borrowed from Classical Persian توپ (tōp), perhaps through Ottoman Turkish طوپ (top), from Old Turkic [script needed] (tōp), [script needed] (tolp). Compare Assamese তোপ (tüp), Kannada ತೋಪು (tōpu).
