From Proto-Indo-Iranian *páyHas (milk), from Proto-Indo-European *péyH-o-s (fat, milk). Cognate with Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬵 (paiiah), 𐬞𐬀𐬉𐬨𐬀𐬥 (paēman), Latvian piens, Lithuanian píenas, English fat.
